Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Annoying, possibly impossible question: Best 'sound" detectives needed

Friends...
I'm going thru some old compilation CDs of Dead stuff, and found this excellent but clearly mis-labelled version of EYES.

It says 11/29/81, but I checked out the version and it is NOT it.

The one I have sounds like it could be '81, POSSIBLY '82 as well, and all I can tell you is it's a shade over 9 minutes long and is very differently cadenced--in that especially for an early 80's version it is NOT fast...it's a mellow, beautifuly played version that seems to take an extra riff or two in the main musical theme...Jerry's vocals as well are not rushed, and he holds the notes a bit longer than almost any early 80's version....sounds like an AUD, but a good one, most likely a FOB...

whether or not it's from San Fran as my incorrect label states, I dunno...but if ANYONE can point me to where this EYES came from, which show, I would be most grateful.

Again, I realize i'm not giving much to go on here...

Just over 9 mins. long, possibly '81, '82 un-rushed instrumentally and vocally...gold star for whoever ID's it!

wineland beat me to it but just punch in the song before and after eyes into deadbase or the setlist and it will narrow the field down.

Can you provide a setlist? That could be of some assistance.

12/28/81? It's slower, but it's almost 12 minutes long, so it might not be right, but check it out just in case.

Sometimes when I burn a cd and play it back on windows media player it will show the name of the tune..."Eyes of the World" for example. Other times it shows the file name...d1t10 for example (disc 1 track 10). Is there a way you can check to see if it shows the later? If it does we could narrow the search down. Another way to check this would be to open the cd, i.e. My computer...disc drive and see the contents. Perhaps it will show the track number of the original source? Maybe none of this will work like I think it might, just a thought.

FOUND IT!!!!

Huge thanks to Wineland (and all) for listing all the '82 EYES shows. (had a feeling after a while iut was an '82.

It's the one from THE SCOPE IN VA. 4/3/82...

I've listened to the starts of the one I have on the disc and in the stream here several times now and it's definitely it...nice mellow version....great vocals from Jerry....I think the whole show is pretty good if this EYES is any indication so i'll consider DLing the whole shebang..

Thanks again all for your efforts, and check out this 4/3/82 EYES when you get a chance!

GC

Not sure about this, but isn't that the show where Jerry and Phil swapped sides in between sets?

Nice! Just checking back in to see if you found it. Will be my morning show tomorrow at work. Glad you found it. That type of thing will stick with me until I find it or go crazy... which may explain a few things about me. Ever wake up in the middle of the night with the answer to the impossible question? Ahhh, such satisfaction.

Take care Grendel.

hey grendl, just dropped in and the first thing i thought of, "it is definitely NOT 4/8/82", one of the fastest ever...and i do like it, pure exuberation (i know, that's not a word)...will now have to check out the 3rd when the mood strikes, thanks bro...shows the flexibility the boys have

cruisin' along at about 89 beats per minute

and the next time, clippin' along at about 142 beats per minute

Amazing how from one week to the next they can go from jogging to sprinting the EYES...

There's a pretty nice NFA in that 4/3/82 show as well.

I dont think it can be that version Liam as it's about as fast as I've ever heard. 5-5-81 could be a possibility...great aud source and a little slower than most from '81.

Just checking back in now--thanks for the narrowing down...i'm about to check out the 5/5/81..

whether that's it or not remains to be seen, but this much is for sure--that is one HELL of a set list for 5/5/81! not familiar w/this show...

as for what song precedes the EYES i'm looking for, I have no clue...the one I have is a stand alone that somehow got on a compilation disc...sounds like it probably goes out into drums, though...

Don't know where you got your info, but I was at the Kiel in St. Louis during July of '81, and they did not play Eyes that night. (I typo'd '91, but it's fixed now)

Set Two: Scarlet>Fire, Sailor>Saint>Franklin's>Drums>Jam>NFA>Wharf Rat>Sugar Magnolia

And now I see that my point is moot.

I know Kiel, and your search Mr. Wineland, is no even Kiel. ;)

Um yeah, that search was the entire '81 tour, now limited to shows with Eyes. Thanks for the heads up.
